UNIST has been ranked 8th in S. Korea and 197 globally in the latest QS World University Rankings, an annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The QS World University Rankings 2023 released on June 8 indicates that UNIST has entered the top 100 list of the best universities in the world for the first time, climbing 15 notches from the 2022 rankings.
The QS World University Rankings has an intricate system of evaluating universities. It has six criteria with different weights that are summed up to get the results. The six criteria are academic reputation (40%), citations per faculty member (20%), faculty-student ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%), international faculty ratio (5%), and international student ratio (5%).
The 2023 edition of QS World University Rankings was the largest ever, with 1,418 institutions across 100 locations, up from 1,300 last year. UNIST was included on the list for the first time in its history last year, ranking 8th in Korea and 212th in the world. The national ranking was the same as last year, yet UNIST made a significant rise of 15 places to 197th, globally. In Korea, Seoul National University, KAIST, POSTECH, Yonsei University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, and UNIST are in the list of global top 200 universities;
This year, UNIST achieved almost full score for Citation per Faculty (99.9 points out of 100), which indicates research excellence. UNIST, in terms of citations, ranked 11th in the world and 2nd in Korea. Other indicators also showed an overall rise. UNIST showed high performance in faculty/student ratio, climbing 21 notches from last year’s 138th. Besides, UNIST also showed a rise in the international faculty ratio and placed 413th, up by 185 notches from last year.
Meanwhile, UNIST ranked 20th in the ‘2022 THE Asia University Rankings,’ released by the British global university evaluation agency. This was one notch up from last year’s ranking. It also rose one place from last year’s No. 5 position among Korean universities.
