On July 10, UNIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LG-Hitachi Water Solutions to pledge mutual support for one another in the pursuit of excellence in the area of new and renewable energy.
In the memorandum of understanding, the two organizations promised to collaborate on the development of innovative technologies that could help us tackle the global water crisis.
Under this partnership, both organizations will undertake the joint research on the development of viable technologies for converting human, agricultural, biomass, and other waste into usable forms of energy, such as methane gas or transportation fuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. With this as a momentum, UNIST hopes to support the cultivation of a variety of industry professionals, including water and waste water treatment operators and environmental engineers.
As a variety of industries have been rapidly growing worldwide causing environmental pollution problems and climate changes, drinking water shortage is become a serious problem. South Korea is already classified as a country with the most water stress among OECD countries. The current drought situation and water pollution associated with climate change are making South Korea’s water shortage problem even worse.
“Working together with LG-Hitachi Water Solutions, we plan on providing people with effective and compliant water treatment solutions and distribution systems,” says President Mooyoung Jung of UNIST.
LG-Hitachi Water Solutions is a joint venture company founded in 2012 by LG Electronics in Korea and Hitachi in Japan. It provides a various services from water treatment including ultrapure water, industrial and waste water to environmental area for recycling and air pollution control. As one of the leading providers of integrated environmental solutions, the company also provide services in business development, investment and system operation.
