On August 4, UNIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean Association for Radiation Application (KARA) to pledge mutual support for one another in the pursuit of excellence in the area of nuclear decommissioning.
Since the recent shutdown of the nation’s first nuclear power plant in Gori, there has been a growing interest in nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
To tackle the challenges caused by the high profile nuclear waste projects, the two organizations promised to cultivate skilled professionals in the nuclear decommissioning and remediation sectors.

“This is a great opportunity to enhance the competitiveness and productivity of the national nuclear industry,” says UNIST President Mooyoung Jung. He continues by saying, “Under this partnership, UNIST hopes to play a central role in expanding the nation’s nuclear energy industry, thereby revitalizing the nuclear decommissioning and waste management sector in the local region.”
“Through the contribution of R&D-related skills and training programs, KARA will also cultivate more capable human resources in nuclear dismantling sectors that currently lack trained professionals,” says President MyungJae Song of KARA.
Established in 1985, the Korean Association for Radiation Application (KARA) is an organization, affiliated with the Ministry of Science and ICT that is designed to contribute to the facilitation of national research into the safe utilization of radiation and radioactive isotopes, as well as to secure industrial safety.
