A new 3D printed creation by Professor Namhun Kim in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering at UNIST will be broadcast via EBS Education Journal, tonight at 11:35 p.m.
3D Willy to be introduced for the first time!
On this day, the research team will introduce various 3D printing equipment, along with Rhino, South Korea’s first 3D printed electric car produced, last year. The current status and application areas of 3D printing technology are also discussed. The program also looks at Professor Kim’s story in building and designing various 3D printer creations, including 3D electric bicycles.
In particular, a recent 3D printer creation by Professor Kim’s team will be unveiled to the public for the first time. Their new creation, called ‘3D Willy’ is an electric boat, in which the whole body is manufactured with 3D printing. The 3D Willy, equipped with a lightweight battery pack, has been launched successfully and test-driven in Gamak pond, UNIST. In the broadcast, we can see the announcer, test-driving it.

It is currently put on display at the 3D Printing Tech Festa 2018, which is held at University of Ulsan from Septemerb 13 to 15, 2018. Hosted by Ulsan City and sponsored by the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, the exhibition provides a variety of attractions in relation to the 3D printing industry. The exhibition features various interesting events, such as plenary speeches, conferences, corporate exhibitions halls, and DfAM (Design for Multilayer Manufacturing) competitions.
“In search for a new 3D printing creation after Rhino, a boat came across my mind,” says Professor Kim. “We hope 3D Willy can draw attention from various people in the shipbuilding and 3D printing industries.”
