On May 12, UNIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ulsan Metropolitan City to accelerate their efforts to lay the groundwork for leading the future automotive industry.
Through the agreement, the two institutions established a new research center for future automotive technology at UNIST and promised to work together to secure competitiveness in the global automotive industry. To this end, the core fundamentals of each field, the R&D of original technologies, performance transfer, and commercialization are promoted. This has been followed by the official signboard-hanging ceremony of the UNIST Center for Smart Mobility.

Managed by UNIST, the center includes Ulsan Technopark, the University of Ulsan, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Ulsan Development Institute, Hyundai Motor Company, and local enterprises, as participating organizations.
Last December, the city of Ulsan had announced its strategic plans and 10 major initiatives for the realization of a city leading the future of the auto industry. The new research center will serve as the central institution for the sustainable growth and technological advances in the automotive industry.

“UNIST aims to lead the change and development of local industries through AI-driven innovation,” says President Yong Hoon Lee of UNIST. “Centered around the UNIST Center for Smart Mobility, we hope to contribute to Ulsan’s smart city development, which includes the development of self-driving cars and smart production process.”
The ceremony has been attended by Mayor Chul Ho Song of Ulsan Metripolitan City, President Yong Hoon Lee of UNIST, Chairman Se-young Hwang of Ulsan Metropolitan Council, President Dong-hyung Cha of Ulsan Technopark, President Jin Hyuk Lim of Ulsan Development Institute, and business leaders from large and small companies.
