Sung-Deuk Choi, Professor of Urban and Environmental Engineering at UNIST, has been honored with an excellence award for this year’s Doosan Yonkang Academic Award for the Environment. Professor Choi was presented with an award plaque and KRW 10 million in prize money at the awards event held in Jeju Shinhwa World on November 3, 2021.
As an expert in measuring and analyzing air pollutant emissions, Professor Choi received credit for carrying out a number of research projects, proposed by the Ministry of Environment, which includes the management of air pollutants (i.e., fine dusts).
In particular, he was honored for developing key technologies for quantifying the contribution of long-range transported air pollution from China, as well as for analyzing the quantity of local air pollutant emissions and their major emission sources. In addition to this, he received credit for developing a converged technology for monitoring and modeling major emitting sources of fine dust from industrial sites.

Professor Choi’s research team analyzed halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Halo-PAHs) in the atmosphere for the first time in Korea and conducted a high-resolution spatial distribution evaluation using a manual atmospheric collector (PAS).
Based on this, the researchers developed contamination maps and human risk mapping technologies, and in particular, succeeded in deriving comprehensive research results ranging from basic physical property analysis for new harmful substances to monitoring and modeling.
Meanwhile, the ‘Doosan Yonkang Award for the Environment’ has been reorganized from the previous ‘Doosan Yonkang Environment Research Fund with the purpose of promoting developments in the environmental field and motivate environmental scientists to carry on with their research.
