The 2021 U-Challenge Festival, showcasing the research outcomes of students who have been challenging themselves over the past six months for their dream of becoming ‘BTS in Science and Technology’ took place on December 3, 2021.
This event was held to present the research accomplishments of 290 students and 60 teams from UNIST and the University of Ulsan who recently partook in the ‘2021 Field-linked Future-leading Human Resources Development Project.‘ They have organized a team, named ‘BTS (Brain to Society)‘ to solve industrial problems, raised by local companies in Ulsan.

The event began with the opening ceremony, attended by major guests and took place in the order of performance presentations by the final eight teams, performance exhibition, award ceremony, and closing ceremony.
At the award ceremony, team HMCL-AF from UNIST team and team Virtual Fit from the University of Ulsan were given the Minister of Science and ICT Award (Grand Prize). Team HMCL-AF had produced excellent results in the field of future mobility through research on high-reliable and ultra-safe unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Team Vulture Fit has introduced non-face-to-face digital healthcare device and AI health trainers.

Subsequently, awards were presented to teams that demonstrated research excellence, which includes six gold-winning teams, seven silver-winning teams, and nine bronze-winning teams. Popularity awards were also delivered to the five teams that won many votes through online voting.
On the same day, a booth for students’ performance exhibition was set up at Kyungdong Hall on the 4th floor of UNIST’s university headquarters. Here, research results from various fields such as demonstrations of drone flights produced by students and exhibitions of blade products for offshore wind power were displayed. The exhibition site was also broadcast online in real time.

UNIST and University of Ulsan were selected for the 2021 Field-linked Future-leading Human Resources Development Project, which has been promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) in April 2021. Based on this, the two universities organized the BTS Team and provided support for education and research, so that students can freely challenge themselves and solve problems on site. These students worked in a team of four or five to carry out projects centered on industrial sites with guidance professors, teaching assistants, and industrial mentors.
In the lobby of Natural Science Building (108), an exhibition booth was installed to showcase some of student accomplishments from the AI Challengers Program (AICP) and the Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Project (UIRP), which took place throughout the year 2021. These projects have been participated by a total of 45 groups and 193 students.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony has been attended by UNIST President Yong Hoon Lee, Dean Sung Youb Kim (College of Engineering, UNIST), President Yeon Cheon Oh from the University of Ulsan, Dean Myeong Jae Yi College of Engineering, University of Ulsan), Vice Dean Seung Hyun Hur (College of Engineering, University of Ulsan), Senior Manager Ho-won Kang (Science, ICT and Future HR Development Division, MSIT), and Han Young Ro Han from Ulsan Industry University Convergence Institute.
