After a three-month-long journey, the 2021 UNIST-POSTECH-KAIST Data Science Competition ended with a virtual award ceremony that took place on the metaverse on January 19, 2022.
Organized by the UNIST Department of Industrial Engineering, this is the first data science competition that has been co-hosted by UNIST, POSTECH, and KAIST. A total of 38 teams and 144 students competed this year to predict shale gas production and solve the optimization problems, using various data science techniques.
A total of 12 teams have advanced to the finals through quantitative evaluation in the preliminary stage. The award-winning teams were determined through presentation assessments and KAIST was awarded the Grand Prize. The Gold Prize was presented to both KAIST and the UNIST-POSTECH coalition team, while the Silver Award was given to UNIST. The Bronze Award was presented to KAIST. In addition to the competition category awards, seven participation awards were given to eligible participating teams from UNIST and KAIST.
The award-winning teams have also been presented with prizes, worth KRW 10 million by the Korea National Oil Corporation(KNOC), SK Innovation Co., Ltd., Kakao Enterprise Corp., UNIST Institute for the 4th Industrial Revolution, and UNIST College of Information-Bio Convergence Engineering.
Jointly hosted by each university’s department of industrial engineering, the UNIST-POSTECH-KAIST Data Science Competition takes place under the theme of “Solving Industrial and Social Challenges through Data Science.” The 2021 competition has been organized by the UNIST Department of Industrial Engineering. The second competition is scheduled to be held this year by the KAIST Department of Industrial and System Engineering.
