Two researchers from UNIST have been honored with the ‘2022 Young Physicist Awards’ by the Korean Physical Society (KPS). The recipients are Jin Kyun Kim (Advisor: Professor Chae Un Kim) and Daeseong Yong (Advisor: Professor Jaeup Kim)from the Department of Physics at UNIST.
Jin Kyun Kim in the Ph.D. program of Physics at UNIST was given the Young Biophysical Scientist Award. His research involves the studies of functional properties of bio-proteins, such as enzymes using X-rays. In 2020, he succeeded in analyzing the intermediate states of carbonic anhydrase (CA) with X-rays to investigate the role of various metal ions in this CA. Carbonic anhydrase plays an important role in respiration by influencing CO2 transport in the blood.

Daeseong Yong in the Ph.D. program of Physics at UNIST was awarded the ‘Young Statistical Physicist Award‘ for presenting the AI method that can improve simulation performance required for research. His research interests include the numerical methods of SCFT and machine learning in statistical mechanics, in particular the studies of the statistical and physical properties of nanostructures, generated from block copolymers.
Meanwhile, the Korean Physical Society selected and awarded young researchers every spring and fall to foster and recognize the work of emerging young scientists. Last year, Dr. Dong-Bin Shin, who obtained his Ph.D. in 2019 under the mentorship of Professor Noejung Park was given the ‘Young Physicist Award’.
The award ceremony took place remotely at the 2022 Subcommittee Meeting of the Korean Physical Society on April 20, 2022.
