The UNIST AI Technology Open Workshop took place on September 21, 2023, in the auditorium of the Main Administrations Building of UNIST. The event was attended by a diverse group of individuals, including domestic and foreign artificial intelligence experts, as well as professors from UNIST. The workshop aimed to showcase the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and share the research findings of UNIST.
Notably, representatives from 21 companies and institutions, along with teachers, researchers, and students, participated in the event, demonstrating a strong interest in the cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence.
During his welcoming speech, Vice President Jaiyong Lee emphasized the importance of having a platform for exchanging the latest research outcomes in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. He expressed his hopes for the UNIST AI workshop to grow into a globally renowned academic conference that leads the world in artificial intelligence technology.

The workshop featured keynote lectures by international scholars, research presentations by professors from UNIST Artificial Intelligence Graduate School, special lectures by domestic experts, and panel discussions involving participants and experts.
Professor Jean Oh from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States and Dr. Emtiyaz Khan, leader of the Advanced Intelligence Project Team at RIKEN, Japan’s leading state-run research institute, delivered keynote addresses on robotics AI and adaptive AI, respectively.

Additionally, Director Sangdoo Yun from Naver AI Lab, Managing Director Woohyung Lim from LG AI Research Institute, and President Dongjoo Shin from MOBILINT, Inc., an AI semiconductor startup, delivered special lectures. Director Yun and Managing Director Lim discussed AI visual recognition technology and the latest AI business models, while President Shin focused on comprehending AI semiconductors and the latest trends both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, professors from UNIST Artificial Intelligence Graduate School, including Seungryul Baek, Jaejun Yoo, Gi-soo Kim, and Kyungdon Joo, presented their latest research findings.
This year marks the third anniversary of the UNIST AI Technology Open Workshop, which was initiated in 2021 with the aim of establishing an artificial intelligence innovation ecosystem in the region and accelerating innovation in related industries.

Dean Jae-Young Sim of UNIST Artificial Intelligence Graduate School, who hosted the event, expressed that the Graduate School has experienced rapid growth and development in a short period of time. He affirmed the commitment to further enhance the region and the country’s capabilities in artificial intelligence through open academic conferences involving academia and industry.
Since 2019, UNIST has recognized artificial intelligence as a pivotal research field and has actively nurtured it. With the establishment of the UNIST Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in September 2020, the university has been dedicated to developing advanced technologies and cultivating key talents in artificial intelligence. Initiatives, such as the ‘AI Innovation Park,’ a local industrial innovation hub, and the ‘AI Novatus Academia,’ an education program for industry professionals, are also underway.
