“The future of automotive designs lies in our hands,” said Prof. Bumsuk Lim, who spoke Monday afternoon at UNIST Business Administration Building.
On May 19, Prof. Bumsuk Lim of Art Center College of Design (ACCD) was invited to deliver a special lecture on “Future Trends in Automotive Design.” The primary purpose of this event was to provide students who are considering a career in the field of automotive design an opportunity to interact with Prof. Lim, one of the world-leading automotive designer, thereby hoping to inspire them to consider rewarding careers in vehicle design or engineering.
The event was attended by an audience of over 1oo students and faculty at UNIST as part of the school’s acclaimed 2015 Global Speaker Series. Opening remarks and introductions were provided by Prof. Yunwoo Jeong (School of Design and Human Engineering).
To wrap up the lecture, Prof. Lim took nearly 30 minutes of questions from the students that ranged from the discussion on future of cars to technical questions about some of the challenges of designing driverless vehicles.
Prof. Lim states, “Designing for new technologies always seems to take more time than you anticipate. However, when designing a vehicle, one should think outside the box and never be complacent with their current knowledge.” He continues by saying, “Designers give technology meaning, not vice versa.”

Born in Seoul, Prof. Bumsuk Lim is one of the early pioneers of Korean automotive designers in overseas. Prof. Lim received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in the field of Transportation Design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, United States. Shortly after completing B.Sc in Trasportation Design, he continues to work in automotive field as an automotive designer. Prior to joining ACCD, he worked s Advanced studio in Tokyo.
After extensive work experience at Honda’s WAVE Advanced Design Center in Tokyo, he came back to California to join the Transportation Design Department at ACCD, teaching advanced transportation design classes while working as an independent design consultant focusing on advanced vehicle concepts. Since then, he has been teaching and lecturing advanced concepts on transportation design and future mobility around the US, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and India.
At Art Center, he created Art Center’s first Personal Mobility Design class in 2008 to research and develop personal mobility of the future. Under his leadership there have been many creative solutions including ‘Wearable motorcycle concept’ that has been featured on many media outlets.
With his over 25 years of experience in automotive design field, Prof. Lim consults global auto manufacturers with advanced concepts and strategic research. His clients include Hyundai Motors, GM Shanghai, Chery, Nanjing Auto, Nissan Taiwan, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Daihatsu, TVS India, Fuji heavy Industries, and Kia.
