“UNIST has given me education I need and the opportunity to work with diversified group of people. I am very greatful to have had the opportunity to study at UNIST,” says HyeJi Lee (Department of Eco-friendly Environemtal Engineering), an alumna of UNIST.
According to Ms. HyeJi Lee, one of the most rewarding experience while studying at UNIST was the international research internship program. “I would like to advise all students at UNIST to build their professional credentials by investing some of their time, participating in an internship,” says Ms. Lee.
On April 1, 2014, Ms. HyeJi Lee participated in the Global Internship Program, organized by Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Europe, located in Saarbrücken, Germany. During her 6 months stay at KIST Europe, Ms. Lee was given the chance to actively participate in ongoing research projects, while acquiring an insight in research techniques and methods in their field.
In addition to being actively involved in research projects, conducted at KIST Europe, Ms. Lee had a chance to work with Dr. Nuriye Korkmaz, Senior Researcher at Environmental Safety Group, KIST Europe. There, she engineered filamentous bacteriophages for enhanced gold binding and metallization properties. The research findings appeared in the May 2015 issue of the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science (JCIS).
Now Mr. Lee is preparing to embark on a new chapter in her life that will help prepare her for a career in Vanture Capital back in her homeland. She looks forward to joining the work force and becoming a professional engineer and inventor, shaping the future of technology around the globe.
Ms. Lee states, “This internship at KIST Europe was such a life-changing experience. Now I am equipped with a wealth of knowledge that will be invaluable for my future career. I will treasure this experience for a long time to come.” She continues by saying, “And be sure to make the most of your undergraduate years, while at UNIST.”
