On October 1, UNIST held a ceremony to encourage its students who attended the 2021 International Student Car Competition. This ceremony has been organized to cheer for the success of students who have been nurtured by the UNIST Center for Smart Mobility.
The center has formed and helped a research club of 30 students with the aim of revitalizing research on autonomous vehicles and future mobility. Through this, students have gained valuable experience in related fields by performing various research, across all fields of future mobility. Among those, five students with excellent capabilities had the opportunity to verify the performance of their own future cars. They showcased their vehicles at this year’s International Student Car Competition, which took place from October 1 to 4, 2021.
The International Student Car Competition evaluates the performance of self-driving cars and EVs, manufactured by university-level students. A total of 65 teams from 40 universities participated this year. The competition is held annually to foster talents in the future automobile field. It has been sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and organized jointly by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) and the Korean Auto-vehicle Safety Association.
This is the first time that university students in Ulsan participated in this competition. Auto parts companies in Ulsan region also contributed to the students’ challenge. About 30 auto parts companies that are currently working with the UNIST Center for Smart Mobility assisted them with the necessary auto parts for the production, and gave technical support.
Meanwhile, the UNIST Center for Smart Mobility was established in May 2020 to serve as the central institution for sustainable growth and technological advances in the automotive industry. About 52 researchers are working in the center, with the aim of supporting the development of original technologies, industry-academia cooperation, commercialization, and training of manpower.
