Dean Jae-Young Sim of the UNIST Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (AIGS) has been honored with a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT (MSIT) for his significant contributions to the development of the AI field by cultivating key digital talents.
Since 2019, Dean Sim has laid a solid foundation for research and education in AI as a key research discipline at UNIST. He has established a comprehensive AI education system in collaboration with faculty from various departments, including the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Department of Industrial Engineering.
Following the establishment of the UNIST AIGS in 2020, Dean Sim secured outstanding faculty members, reorganized the research environment, and further reinforced the foundations of AI education and research. He has also served as the Dean of the College of Information and Biotechnology at UNIST from 2021 for three years, playing a crucial role in the dissemination and promotion of AI technology within the institution.
Today, the UNIST AIGS has emerged as a leading institution for AI education in Korea, nurturing 582 graduate students under the guidance of 41 faculty members. Dean Sim has implemented a curriculum that blends rigorous foundational studies with practical problem-solving skills, aimed at producing master’s and doctoral graduates with global competitiveness.
Students from the program are showcasing their research capabilities through thesis presentations and winning awards at prestigious conferences. Graduates are becoming key players in driving AI technology innovation across various industries.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dean Sim has excelled in fostering industry-academia cooperation. Through the AI Innovation Park project, he has provided tailored AI education programs for employees in the Southeast Region of Korea, led problem-solving initiatives using industrial data, and cultivated practical AI experts within the community.
In his acceptance speech, Dean Sim expressed gratitude, stating, “I am thrilled to be recognized for the efforts and achievements of UNIST AIGS.” He further emphasized, “This accolade is a reflection of the dedication of our faculty and students and UNIST will continue to contribute to the advancement of the nation and society by nurturing world-class AI talents.”
