Not only has the chemistry industry in Ulsan played an important role in the local community, it has also made remarkable contributions to the country’s economic prosperity.
On March 20, UNIST held the “Global Leader Special Invitation Symposium” in the Auditorium of UNIST to commemorate the 9th Annual Ulsan Chemistry Day. This special event, organized by the City of Ulsan and Ulsan Techno Park featured a host of presentations on the future of chemistry and IT industry, as well as congratulatory addresses by UNIST President Moo Je Cho and Mayor Gi-hyun Kim of Ulsan.
Approximately 400 people from government and chemical industry circles assembled to celebrate this special day. Among those present were President Hong-Seok Kim of the Korean Chemical Society (KCS), Chairman YeoungCheol Park of Ulsan Metropolitan City Council, President Han-Young Kang of the Korean Union of Chemical Science and Technology Societies (KUCST), President Suntak Gwon of Korea Small & Medium Chemical Business Association (KOSCA), President Jonghun Park of Ulsan Chemistry Forum, President Chi-Yoon Lee of Korean Hydrogen Industry Association (KHIA), and Chang-Ryong Kim, President & CEO at Ulsan Techno Park.
Under the common topic of “The Future of Chemistry and IT Industry,” Dr. Klaus Müllen, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) gave an invited talk on “Carbon Nanostructures as Functional Multitalents: Sensing, Catalysis, Drug Delivery, Electronics.”
Moreover, Kyu-Ho Lee, Director at Korean Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) and Professor Taekhwan Hyeon in the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) also gave invited talks. These invited talks on subjects allied to “Global Energy Environment Change and Issues in Korea’s Future Energy” and “Nanoparticle Research”.
Ulsan Petrochemical Industrial Complex was held in 1968 as a day of chemical industry. Since then, March 22 has been celebrated in Ulsan as “Ulsan Chemistry Day” to commemorate the day of the groundbreaking ceremony for Ulsan Petrochemical Industrial Complex.
