The UNIST Department of Computer Science and Engineering has announced that Professor Jaeyeon Lee’s team has achieved outstanding recognition at the recent Korea Haptics Conference.
Under the guidance of Professor Lee, students in the TACT Lab received the Outstanding Paper Award for their remarkable research on leveraging the straightening and retracting power of hands as input values, particularly in virtual reality applications. The proposed method offers the advantage of intuitive and flexible directional changes, in contrast to traditional input methods involving joysticks or touch pads. The team experimentally demonstrated that not only the force of pressing the hand but also the force of opening the hand can be utilized as computer inputs.
The study was led by Sungwoo Kang (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, UNIST) and Buyoung Mun (Combined MS/Ph.D. Program of Computer Science and Engineering, UNIST). Notably, Sungwoo Kang’s achievement garnered significant attention as he was the only undergraduate recipient of the Outstanding Paper Award at the conference.
Expressing his excitement, Sungwoo Kang said, “I am delighted to have achieved such a positive outcome at this academic conference. I am eager to continue conducting various studies on hand movements and their applications.”
Furthermore, the conference featured the finals of an idea contest sponsored by LG Electronics, with the theme of Meeting Future Home Appliances and AR/VR/XR/Haptic. Team InTact, consisting of Jiseong Kim (Department of Electrical Engineering) and Buyoung Mun, presented their innovative idea on “Self-repairing electronics that provide haptic feedback.” Their idea received the Second Prize Award and garnered praise from both judges and attendees.
Jiseong Kim expressed gratitude for the invaluable research opportunities, conference participation experiences, and guidance provided by the TACT Lab. Kim also expressed a strong desire to continue researching the application of haptic technology in various fields in the future.
The Korea Haptics Conference, the first official academic conference of the Korea Haptics Society, was held in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province. The conference spanned four days, from November 22 to November 25, and welcomed over 200 domestic and international haptics researchers.
