Seven undergraduate students from UNIST have been awarded the Presidential Science Scholarship for the 2024 academic year. The recipients are Seo Yeon Kim (Department of Chemistry), Suae Park (Department of Physics), Seokhyun (Department of Computer Engineering), Moogeon Kim (Department of Semiconductor Engineering), Gyuhwan Shin (School of New UNISTars), Chang Han An (School of New UNISTars), and Seungmin Yang (School of New UNISTars).
The Presidential Science Scholarship is a program supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), aimed at nurturing future talents in science and technology in Korea. This year, a total of 157 individuals were selected, including 60 first-year students in Korean science and engineering majors, 60 third-year students, 17 local talents, and 20 international students, based on evaluations of their academic achievements, research experience, and growth potential.
The seven scholars will receive full tuition coverage and an academic incentive of 2.5 million won per semester. This support is designed to help students focus on their research and studies.
Among the selected scholars, Seo Yeon Kim has had a profound interest in chemistry since high school. After enrolling at UNIST, he was recognized as a Presidential Science Scholar due to his consistent dedication and research accomplishments. He has particularly distinguished himself through his problem-solving skills demonstrated in various research projects alongside his studies.
Seo Yeon Kim stated, “I pursued chemistry with the dream of making a better world. I find great fulfillment in new discoveries, and I am committed to becoming a world-class chemist.”
Suae Park expressed her aspiration “to become a physicist and elevate Korea to a quantum powerhouse.” Seokhyun An expressed gratitude to Professor Hyounghun Kim of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence for his support, stating, “I hope to engage in more challenging and significant research in the future.”
Gyuhwan Shin shared his vision, saying, “I aim to be a scientist who engages with society to identify and solve problems, rather than a scientist solely focused on research.”
“The selection of Seo Yeon Kim is a point of pride for our department and exemplifies the educational achievements of the university as a whole,” stated Jaeheung Cho, Head of the Chemistry Department. President Chong Rae Park added, “We will continue to actively support UNIST students in leading successful lives.”
