UNIST recently held an event, highlighting the key achievements of its efforts in bringing about innovation in industries in the southeastern region of Korea through artificial intelligence (AI).
Dubbed ‘AI Innovation Day,‘ the event took place at UNIST on December 19, 2023. The primary purpose of this event is to showcase the major accomplishments of UNIST AI Innovation Park, which has been in operation since 2021. It also aimed to strengthen cooperation between industry and academia. Over 200 attendees participated in the event, including representatives from companies in the southeastern region of Korea, research institutes, university professors, students, and officials from Ulsan Metropolitan City.
In a congratulatory speech, Director Chae Kwon Lee from the Future Strategy Headquarters at Ulsan Metropolitan City expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for discovering many businesses and producing good results for AI Innovation Park,” and added, “Please continue to serve as a stepping stone for local companies to enhance their competitiveness through digital transformation.”
During the event, achievements in solving practical problems for companies using AI in the manufacturing and biomedical fields were showcased. These accomplishments were a result of the AI Novatus Academia’s Project Based Learning (PBL) practices. The AI Novatus Academia, an incumbent education program, has produced 281 graduates from 155 companies in Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province over the past three years. The academy has also accumulated 83 industrial field application databases through its PBL practice.
The event also disclosed research results in the field of AI in cooperation with local industries. UNIST professors specializing in AI are involved in 20 research projects that aim to enhance the AI innovation capabilities of local companies. These projects focus on areas such as quality innovation, process optimization, energy saving, occupational safety, disease prediction, and new material development.
Additionally, seven AI innovation park companies, including Core Dot Today, ABH Co., Ltd., and Simdo Company Inc., announced their business models and technologies during the event, expanding cooperation opportunities. Currently, there are 12 AI-specialized startups located in the AI innovation park, receiving support for their growth, including joint research initiatives.
Vice President Jaiyong Lee of UNIST expressed hope, saying “We aim for this AI Innovation Day to become a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences between industries and academia in Ulsan and the southeastern region of Korea, leading to industrial innovation.”
Director Jae-Young Sim of UNIST AI Innovation Park emphasized the park’s role in building a distinctive AI innovation ecosystem suitable for Ulsan and industrial cities in the southeastern region of Korea through education, research, and start-up nurturing activities.
