The UNIST Artificial Intelligence Graduate School (AIGS) announced the successful completion of the 2024 AI Technology Open Workshop, bringing together academia and industry to explore collaborative models for AI technology development.
This workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the latest trends in AI technology and showcased pioneering research conducted by graduate students. Among the 14 participants were esteemed experts from prestigious institutions, including the University of Oxford and the University of Birmingham, alongside renowned AI specialists from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and faculty members from UNIST. The discussions centered around the transformative impact of AI across various industries and its influence on everyday life.
Participants were afforded opportunities to learn about international scholarship programs and gain practical experience with advanced AI technologies. A dedicated poster presentation allowed attendees to examine AI from multiple perspectives, fostering stimulating discussions.
In his opening remarks, Dean Jae-Young Sim of UNIST AIGS underscored the significance of the event, stating, “As AI technology evolves at a rapid pace, this workshop serves as a crucial platform for sharing the accomplishments of the past five years and for exploring future research directions.” UNIST professors presented exemplary research papers, while representatives from HD Hyundai conducted a seminar focused on the industry applications of AI. The student-led poster presentations generated engaging dialogue, and special lectures delivered by international experts drew considerable interest.
Among the special lectures were presentations by Professor Hyung Jin Chang from the University of Birmingham and Professor Victor Francisacariu from the University of Oxford, who addressed human-centered vision AI and augmented reality technologies. Team Leaders Cheon Hwan Jeong, Jae Hee Lee, and Dae Yong Han from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) participated in a seminar that emphasized the integration of AI technology within the industry.
UNIST AIGS took the opportunity to highlight the exceptional research contributions of Professors Kyeongdon Joo, Namhun Kim, Seulki Lee, and Jaejun Yoo, who have garnered recognition at prominent global AI conferences and leading academic journals for their innovations in AI-driven industrial advancements.
This year’s workshop marks the fourth iteration of the “UNIST AI Technology Open Workshop,” which was initiated in 2021 to cultivate an AI innovation ecosystem within the region and to promote industrial progress. Dean Jae-Young Sim expressed his vision for the future by stating, “We aspire to evolve this workshop into a prominent academic conference that bridges collaboration between academia and industry.”
Established in 2020, UNIST AIGS remains committed to advancing cutting-edge technologies and nurturing talent through initiatives such as the ‘AI Innovation Park’ and the ‘AI Novatus Academy.’
