On May 29, UNIST celebrated the students who have recently completed the second term of the AI Novatus Academia certification program. A ceremony also took place to recognize their achievements throughout their journey at UNIST.
A total of 28 trainees were presented with certificates of course completion at the ceremony, which took place in the Auditorium of the UNIST Industry-University Convergence Center. The ceremony consisted of a presentation of course certificates, followed by final reports on the PBL (Project-based Learning).
Starting in January 2022, the trainees completed a five-month training program, which includes two months of theoretical training and three months of practical training. Through the course of this five-month program, participants had the opportunity to practice the real-life projects, utilizing on-site data. Practical training has been conducted in a manner in which industrial employees from various fields choose problems they wish to solve and come up with a good solution. At the closing ceremony, several cases that employ AI tools were introduced.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., LTD. developed a type of eddy-current testing (ECT) method based on artificial intelligence (AI). It has been designed to diagnose defects, arising from cracks, corrosion, and wear in tubes that determine the total life cycle of power plants, using AI. The new method is expected to save more than KRW 20 billion annually, as it could predict defect growth rate, operability, and life cycle, while optimizing the life cycle maintenance and replacement of tubes in power plant condenser via AI models.
In addition to this, nine other projects were carried out during the program. Hyosung Electric Co., Ltd. applied the AI model in the production of electronic parking brake motor, which is part of vehicle electrification. The new method is expected to save more than KRW 500 million per year, as the existing method lacks both accuracy and precision when it comes to quality assessment.
Meanwhile, the AI Novatus Academia is an intensive program, specifically designed for industrial engineers in the southeast region of Korea who are interested in pursuing a certificate program. New participants for the AI Novatus Academia are being recruited for its fourth term until June 17, 2022. The next term begins in July 2022.
