UNIST announced the successful completion of the third UNIST Industry-Academic Convergence Forum, held at the Market Hall of the University-Industry Cooperation Building. This event aimed to explore collaborative strategies for advancing space and marine industries within the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region.
Under the theme “Finding New Pathways in the Large-Scale Convergence of Space and Marine Sectors,” the forum attracted over 80 leading experts from across the country. Participants engaged in knowledge sharing on current technological developments and discussed concrete models for industry-academic-research collaboration.
The forum featured four distinguished lectures. The first was delivered by JungHwan Ko, former Director of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), who highlighted Korea’s successful development of the Nuri rocket, discussing the achievements and challenges in national launch vehicle technology. He emphasized the importance of autonomous launch capabilities and outlined future directions for subsequent technological advancements.
The second lecture was presented by Professor Hyun-Ung Oh of the Korea Aerospace University (KAU). He analyzed trends in small satellite development and the expanding commercial space market, emphasizing the significance of broadening industrial applications of space technologies.
In the marine sector, Former Vice President Chan-Hong Park of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology provided an overview of marine science policy, including the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ operations to Busan. Following this, Director Seung-Ho Shin from the Korea ResearchInstitute of Ships and Ocean engineering(KRISO) discussed recent advancements in autonomous ships and smart port technologies, highlighting key projects in these areas.

In his welcoming speech, President Chong Rae Park reaffirmed UNIST’s commitment to fostering industry-academic partnerships that contribute to regional development. He further stated, “Space and marine sectors represent strategic growth engines for UNIST. We aim to concretize collaborative models that fuse cutting-edge technologies and foster regional economic progress.”
UNIST continues to strengthen its collaborative networks among university, regional industries, and research institutions. The university plans to institutionalize this industry-academic convergence forum as a regular event and aims to lead regional industrial innovation through continued cooperation.
