On April 23, the first session of the Preparatory Commission for the law for the status change of UNIST was held in the Board Room located on the 22 floor of the S-Tower, Seoul. The meeting was attended by the members of UNIST Preparatory Committee to discuss all the matters related to the law for the status change of UNIST.
The main agenda for this meeting was to deliberate on rules and regulations regarding the establishment and operations of the Preparatory Committee of UNIST.
Members of this Preparatory Committee has been appointed by the Minister of the Science, ICT and Future Planning of Republic of Korea (MSIP) upon the approval of the National Assembly on March 3, 2015. Dr. Jang-Moo Lee, the chairman of board of trustees of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has been appointed as Chair of the Preparatory Committee. The committee includes President Moo Je Cho of UNIST, Director General for Planning, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and Prof. Kyuyoung Song at University of Ulsan College of Medicine.
Each members of this committee will be responsible for the preparation of the bylaw, election of executive members, as well as the registration of the establishment of a juristic person.
Once this process is completed smoothly, UNIST will reborn as one of Korea’s Science and Technology research Institutes under a special law with government funding in the latter half of this year. This would bring UNIST to range with three other Korea’s S&T Research Institutes, KAIST, GIST, and DGIST.
The second meeting has been scheduled for early May.
