UNIST has been ranked as the No. 1 university in South Korea and 11th place in the world, according to the latest Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022.
The Young University Rankings lists the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger, assessing them across teaching, research, international outlook, and their work with industry. A record 539 universities from 74 countries and regions qualify this year.
UNIST climbed to the No. 1 position in South Korea, up two rungs from its ranking last year and was followed by POSTECH, GIST, Ajou University, and Incheon National University. KAIST, which claimed the No. 1 spot in the 2021 rankings, has been excluded from the evaluation, as it is no longer under 50 years old.
The 2022 ranking also revealed that France’s PSL Research University claimed the top spot. Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University came second, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was third. Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands came in fourth, while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University came in fifth.
UNIST’s strong showing was primarily driven by its strengths in its citations and international outlook. Besides, when compared to last year’s rankings, the majority of indicators have shown a significant increase.
