The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UNIST proudly announces the appointment of one of its esteemed alumni, Anh Tong, to a faculty position at Korea University.
Dr. Tong, a distinguished scholar and researcher, is set to embark on his new role as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Korea University, starting March 2024.
His research expertise spans a range of topics, including probabilistic machine learning methods and Gaussian processes. In his new capacity, Dr. Tong will focus on developing machine learning approaches that integrate differential equations and stochastic analysis to enhance theoretical insights and construct reliable, explainable, and trustworthy machine learning models.
Having earned his doctorate degree in February 2021 under the mentorship of Professor Jaesik Choi who has now moved to KAIST, Dr. Tong’s research endeavors during his time at UNIST centered on the creation of interpretable intelligent machines capable of quantifying uncertainty from data. His specialization in sequential data analysis, particularly time series, aimed to ensure precise predictions and offer interpretations through easily understandable reports.
Following the successful completion of his doctoral studies, Dr. Tong continued to expand his research horizons as a post-doctoral researcher at KAIST, exploring diverse research domains to enrich his academic portfolio.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Dr. Tong expressed gratitude for the support and opportunities he received at UNIST, emphasizing the pivotal role his alma mater played in shaping his research trajectory. “I am honored to have been entrusted with this new role at Korea University,” stated Dr. Tong. “As a proud UNIST alumnus, I am excited to continue my academic pursuits and contribute to the field of artificial intelligence.”
Dr. Tong also shared words of encouragement for current and future students at UNIST, highlighting the importance of perseverance and patience in achieving significant milestones in academia. “While my academic journey is still in its early stages, I firmly believe that with dedication and resilience, our students at UNIST can realize extraordinary accomplishments,” he remarked.

Q. Please introduce yourself briefly?
I earned a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Jaesik Choi (now at KAIST). Following my graduation in 2021, I spent my time as a postdoctoral researcher at KAIST, where I explored diverse research areas to enrich my academic portfolio.
Q. What is it like to be a university professor and how do you feel about joining Korea University?
Being an assistant professor at Korea University is truly fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach the young brilliant minds and engage in research work alongside them. Korea University, a prestigious institution with a rich history, has placed its trust and support in me, and as a proud UNIST alumnus, I am honored to continue my academic journey here.
Q. What was your research focus areas at UNIST?
During my time at UNIST, my research goal was to develop intelligent machines that are interpretable and can quantify uncertainty from data. Specializing in sequential data analysis, particularly time series, I aimed to ensure accurate predictions and provide interpretations through natural language readable reports.
Q. Which department will be you working in? And what is your area of research?
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Korea University. Following the successful completion of my doctoral studies, I continue to work on various machine learning approaches, with a deep connection to differential equations and stochastic analysis, to explore theoretical understandings and build reliable, explainable and trustworthy machine learning models.
Q. What advice would you give to junior students at UNIST?
While my own academic journey is still in its early stages, I firmly believe that with perseverance and patience, our students at UNIST can accomplish remarkable achievements.
