The School of Energy and Chemical Engineering at UNIST has announced that one of its graduates has recently been appointed as an assistant professor at Sogang University. Jaegeon Ryu (Advisor: Professor Soojin Park) is an alumnus who has recently been appointed to a faculty position.
Dr. Jaegeon Ryu obtained his Ph.D. in February 2018 under the mentorship of Professor Soojin Park, who has now moved to POSTECH. During his school years, Dr. Ryu studied the materials and systems for developing next-generation secondary batteries. After that, he worked as a research associate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and POSTECH, respectively. Dr. Ryu is about to begin his new career as an assistant professor within the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Sogang University, beginning March 2022.
“The secondary battery industry is one of the core industries in the fourth industrial revolution, thus there has been active research and practice related to the development of secondary battery systems,” says Dr. Ryu. “However, the ever-increasing price of valuable metals (cobalt, lithium, etc.) used in the lithium secondary battery, is the major factor inhibiting its transition into a true next-generation battery.”
He adds, “Today, researchers are seeking better ways to replace the expensive lithium-ion batteries, such as exploiting the multi-metal approach. I also plan on conducting research to develop a revolutionary new battery system, exploiting the multi-metal approach. Through this, I hope to introduce a new paradigm shift in battery development.”
