On March 3, UNIST formalized a strategic partnership with Asan Medical Center through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Seoul. The agreement establishes a comprehensive framework to accelerate research and innovation in medical artificial intelligence (AI).
The collaboration is designed to combine UNIST’s advanced AI computing infrastructure and data science capabilities with Asan Medical Center’s extensive clinical expertise and high-quality medical data. By integrating computational power with real-world clinical insight, the two institutions aim to develop next-generation medical AI solutions within a secure and efficient data-driven research environment.
The signing ceremony was attended by UNIST President Chong Rae Park and Asan Medical Center President Seung-Il Park, along with key representatives from both organizations. Discussions focused on long-term collaboration strategies and pathways to generate impactful joint research outcomes.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will pursue a wide range of initiatives, including: ▲ Joint development and operation of data infrastructure for medical AI research, ▲ Establishment of a data research steering committee, ▲ Implementation of a comprehensive framework governing data use and intellectual property (IP), ▲ Reciprocal priority access to research infrastructure, ▲ Joint applications for national research funding, and ▲ Co-hosting of academic conferences and symposia.
UNIST will provide large-scale data storage and processing systems for medical data analysis, as well as high-capacity GPU resources for training and developing large AI models. The university also plans to progressively expand the collaboration to incorporate emerging computational technologies, including quantum computing.
Asan Medical Center will grant UNIST researchers access to its clinical research infrastructure and curated medical datasets. To ensure secure research operations, the hospital will provide a dedicated external VPN network along with GPU resources for pilot studies and early-stage model validation. This integrated research environment is expected to accelerate the development and clinical verification of AI models that can be directly applied in healthcare settings.
President Chong Rae Park stated, “Convergence research that integrates AI and biomedical expertise will form a critical foundation for the future of precision medicine. By connecting UNIST’s strengths in basic science, data science, and advanced computing with Asan Medical Center’s clinical capabilities, we aim to deliver tangible outcomes that can be translated into real-world healthcare applications.”
President Seung-Il Park added, “The combination of our world-class clinical data and UNIST’s cutting-edge AI technologies will serve as a driving force for innovation in medical practice. We are committed to integrating next-generation AI solutions into clinical settings to provide patients with more precise, safe, and personalized care.”
