The Department of Design at UNIST is pleased to announce its annual design exhibition, the UNIST Design Showcase 24 – Peek’n, running from December 4 to 20, 2024. This showcase highlights the creative and practical solutions developed by imminently graduating students, addressing contemporary societal challenges through innovative designs that enhance quality of life.
Beyond a mere display of artworks, the showcase demonstrates design as a problem-solving tool and a visionary force. Students have embraced their social responsibilities by blending creativity with practicality. Featuring works from four exceptional students, the exhibition emphasizes transformative approaches that uniquely address pressing issues in our communities.
Aziza Abdyrazakova introduces SafeLI, a groundbreaking system that alerts construction site workers to real-time risks. By addressing language barriers and enhancing communication, SafeLI is designed to protect the safety of foreign workers and facilitate collaboration among diverse teams. This project aims to lower industrial accident rates and improve conditions on Korean construction sites, where a variety of manpower converges.
Donierbek Abdurakhimov presents Lichtspiel, a distinctive tabletop device that communicates time through subtle light rather than traditional numbers or sounds. This innovative design is particularly beneficial for individuals who require heightened concentration, such as those with ADHD.
Gail Rayla Emanuelle Parayno has developed PuffPal, an engaging game aimed at children with asthma. Through playful interaction, children learn to manage their condition while parents can effectively track medication and monitor their child’s health. This project not only alleviates the burden of health management, but also fosters communication and cooperation within families.
Yernur Ashirbekov has created Horus, a head-mounted display (HMD) for the visually impaired. This user-friendly device is designed to enhance digital accessibility and remove barriers to information, providing a more intuitive interface for visually impaired users.
“This exhibition encapsulates the challenges and growth our students have experienced at UNIST, as it showcases their journey from identifying real-world problems to exploring new design possibilities.” stated Professor Hwang Kim from the Department of Design at UNIST. “It serves as a meaningful platform to connect creative ideas with social impact, offering a glimpse into the true value of design.”
