“What really attracted me to UNIST was its strong research activity and expertise that is recognized globally,” says Dr. Hyeon Keo Park, the Director of UNIST Fusion Plasma Laboratory.
For future students considering a degree at UNIST, Dr. Park gives his top reasons why they should choose UNIST.
Dr. Park states, “UNIST has a dynamic, supportive, yet rigorous research environment.” He continues by saying, “This allows our staff to achieve their maximum research potential.”
Dr. Park believes that “UNIST is home to a number of world-class research facilities with the aim of promoting freedom of scientific research.” According to him, “UNIST has made aggressive committments to research and higher education and I believe this effort will help establish UNIST as a first-class S&T research institution in a short time scale.”
When asked what advice he would give to aspiring young scientists, Dr. Park responded: “A good researcher is not just born overnight.” According to Dr. Park, “For those considering a career in this field, one should not limit the imagination to the current confinement concept of the fusion plasmas. Yet, be ready with their dilligence and patience.”
In 2014, Dr. Park joined UNIST as a Distinguished Professor with research and teaching focus in fusion plasmas physics via advanced imaginig diagnostics. His current research interests include the areas of advanced imaging diagnostics for plasma dynamics and stability and transport physics of toroidal plasmas.
Dr. Park wears many academic hats. He received his B.Sc. degree in Physics from University of Southern California. He obtained his M.S. degree in Plasma Physics and Ph.D. degree in the same field from University of California, Los Angeles in 1984. Prior to joining UNIST, he worked as a professor of Physics at POSTECH, Korea. He is a Chairman of the ITPA Diagnostics Topical Group and a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). He has been a member of the Editorial Board of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion since 2008.
