UNIST will celebrate the publication of the book「AI, Beyond Bias」with a book concert at the Jigwanseoga, located on the first floor of UNIST Library at 2 PM on April 2, 2025. The event aims to address biases in AI technology and discuss pathways for inclusive development.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and co-hosted by the Korea Center for Gendered Innovations for Science and Technology Research (GISTeR), the event is open to all UNIST members and citizens of Ulsan.
Moderated by Dean Jae-Young Sim of the UNIST Artificial Intelligence Graduate School, the event will feature presentations by the book’s authors, including Vice President Hyun Sil Ahn of UNIST, Managing Director Ohsung Kwon from the Microsoft Innovation Hub, Director Won-Young Cho of the Software Policy Research Institute (SPRi), and Director Heisook Lee from GISTeR. They will discuss the ethical issues surrounding AI and its societal impacts.
Key topics include the significance of diversity in AI innovation, the potential of generative AI to break down barriers, and the need for inclusive design. Speakers will present strategies to mitigate gender bias in AI.
In the book, Vice President Hyun Sil Ahn of UNIST emphasizes that diversity is essential for AI innovation, advocating for the acceptance of change and conflict as opportunities for growth in this technological era. Managing Director Kwon of Microsoft Innovation Hub discusses how generative AI can break down barriers in education, employment, and daily life, stressing the importance of inclusive design for ensuring equal access to technology. Director Won-Young Cho of SPRi explores AI’s role in promoting societal diversity, highlighting the challenge of balancing technological performance with inclusivity to achieve equitable outcomes. Director Heisook Lee of GISTeR provides examples of gender bias in AI and shares strategies for fostering a human-centered AI ecosystem that benefits a wider audience.
UNIST has declared 2025 as the ‘Year of AI Innovation,’ committing to integrate AI across education, research, and administration. Under the slogan ‘One-person per One-generative AI,’ the university plans to support all members in utilizing AI across various fields.
Following the presentations, there will be a Q&A session, book signing, and networking opportunities. Registration is open from March 19 to March 31, with a limit of 60 participants on a first-come, first-served basis via the QR code on the event poster.
Vice President Ahn stated, “This book concert will explore AI’s impact on society and represents a significant step toward fostering a fair and inclusive technological ecosystem.”
