On February 25, the School of New UNISTars welcomed Collaborating Professor Sedol Lee for a special lecture specifically targeting the Class of 2025. The event, held in the auditorium, attracted an audience of 498 enthusiastic freshmen.
In his address, Professor Lee emphasized the importance of challenge and creativity. He encouraged students to build self-confidence and trust in their abilities, stating, “Being confident in yourself and feeling trust in the numbers you have is crucial for maintaining focus. I urge you to challenge yourselves with confidence.”
Professor Lee discussed his approach to the game of Go as one that relies on creativity and intuition. He also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in everyday life, encouraging students to develop their own unique styles.

During his lecture, Professor Lee told the Class of 2025, ‘Embrace AI as an opportunity for growth rather than as a competitor!’
During a Q&A session centered around “Match against AlphaGo,” Professor Lee provided advice to the younger generation. “Embrace AI as an opportunity for growth rather than as a competitor,” he said. “It is vital to leverage AI to enhance your individuality and strengths.”
Professor Lee shared strategies for managing tension, stating, “To avoid feeling nervous, concentrate on the first move to alleviate the pressure of the outcome. As you gain experience, the tension diminishes, although fostering creativity can become more challenging.”
Drawing from his artistic understanding of Go, Professor Lee explained the game’s unique qualities. “Go is an art form with no singular correct answer, reflecting human creativity and infinite possibilities. Unlike AI Go, where efficiency takes precedence, the human game is a product of one-on-one matches.”
President Chong Rae Park praised Professor Lee’s impactful lecture, noting, “His insights provided valuable lessons in challenge and growth, which align with our focus on science and technology.” He further added, “UNIST is committed to advancing AI-based education to nurture talented individuals with innovative perspectives.”
In closing, Professor Lee reflected on his journey, noting that his most memorable experiences came from losses, which he identified as key turning points in his development. Through his lecture, he offered students valuable perspectives on facing challenges and personal growth.
