The Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center at UNIST is a magnificent five-story building, located on the UNIST campus in Ulsan. It has recently been recognized for its architectural excellence and will be open to the public at Taehwa River. The center’s architectural model will also be exhibited at the 2023 Ulsan Architecture Culture Festival, which will take place at Taehwa River National Garden from November 2 to 5, 2023.
This exhibition follows the recent accomplishment of the Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center in winning the ‘2023 Ulsan Metropolitan City Architecture Award‘ in October, 2023. This prestigious award, which is divided into residential, public, and general categories, recognizes buildings and architects that have contributed to enhancing the quality of life for citizens and promoting architectural culture. Among the 62 projects submitted for consideration, only three were awarded the ‘Grand Prize’, while the remaining three were given ‘Excellence Award.’ The architectural models of the award-winning projects, including the Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center, will be prominently displayed at 2023 Ulsan Architecture Culture Festival.
The Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center at UNIST emerged as the winner in the esteemed public category. The center’s design, which successfully combines functional requirements for research and experimentation with a well-planned spatial layout and exceptional aesthetic appeal, impressed the panel of judges.
The Facility Management Team at UNIST, led by Min Han Kim, expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of actively seeking feedback from researchers during the construction process. This collaborative approach allowed them to create a building that is both practical and visually captivating. The Facility Management Team was responsible for the comprehensive design and successful completion of the center.
To celebrate this achievement, a copper plate will be affixed to the outer wall of the Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center, proudly announcing its status as an award-winning architectural masterpiece. The official ceremony will take place during the opening ceremony of the Ulsan Architecture Culture Festival on November 2, 2023.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Industry-Academia Battery R&D Center began in May 2014 and was completed in December 2016. The project received a total investment of 17.7 billion won, with 15 billion won in government funding and 2.7 billion won from UNIST. The center spans a total floor area of 6,300㎡, with one basement floor and five above-ground floors on 8,800㎡ of land, making it the world’s largest research center dedicated to secondary battery research.
