On May 12, UNIST has officially inaugurated the ‘U Institute for Future Strategy‘ to identify and foster new growth engines for the region. This milestone underscores UNIST’s dedication to driving sustainable innovation, fostering cutting-edge research, and transforming Ulsan and the Southeastern Region of Korea into a vibrant, future-ready industrial and technological powerhouse.
A commemorative ceremony was held in the Business Administration Building of UNIST, attended by distinguished guests including President Jae Ho Song of Kyung Dong Holdings Co., Ltd., Beom Soo Seo from the National Assembly of South Korea, Vice Mayor Hyo Dae An for Economic Affairs of Ulsan Metropolitan City, Director Jung Tae Choi from the Ulsan Branch of the Bank of Korea, and Director Yoon Ku Kang of the Ulsan Free Economic Zone (UFEZ) Authority, among others.
The event began with a commemorative speech by President Chong Rae Park, followed by congratulatory messages from key officials. Director Byoung Ki Seo of the U Institute for Future Strategy outlined the institute’s vision and core focus areas. Attendees then participated in the unveiling of the institute’s plaque, symbolizing strengthened collaboration among regional institutions and stakeholders.
The ‘U Institute for Future Strategy‘ functions as a strategic think tank dedicated to regional development, harnessing UNIST’s robust research capabilities to craft strategies for securing future growth drivers. It will develop comprehensive mid- to long-term plans for industrial innovation, encompassing science and technology policy, industrial strategy planning, urban development, and related fields.
A distinctive feature of the institute’s approach is the active involvement of UNIST faculty members, who will lead the development of innovative strategies and translate them into actionable initiatives. The institute will analyze demographic shifts across sectors—including the labor market, industrial structure, housing, welfare, and education—and evaluate their impacts on regional populations. Based on these insights, tailored policies will be proposed to attract young talent and highly skilled professionals, fostering sustainable regional growth.
Director Seo stated, “The U Institute for Future Strategy will serve as a key think tank for sustainable development in the southeastern region. We are committed to supporting regional industrial policies and providing customized consulting to foster synergy with the local community.”
President Park emphasized UNIST’s dedication to regional innovation, saying, “Ulsan is experiencing rapid changes in industry, population dynamics, and environmental challenges.” He further noted, “As a pioneer in regional transformation, UNIST will lead the way in driving a new era of growth and innovation for the southeastern region.”
