UNIST will host the ‘2025 UNIST Music Festival,’ a six-day event celebrating the harmony of science and art through classical music. The festival will take place from August 19 to 24 in Kyungdong Hall and Jigwanseoga on UNIST campus, offering free admission to all attendees.
This year’s festival features performances by 37 students from seven universities, including UNIST, KAIST, GIST, DGIST, POSTECH, as well as the College of Medicine and the School of Music at the University of Ulsan (U of U). Participants are a diverse group of future scientists, medical professionals, and artists, who will collaborate with professional musicians to deliver chamber music performances. Many of the participants are meeting for the first time and will quickly form teams to perform together, fostering a unique blend of backgrounds and disciplines that is expected to create a memorable experience for audiences.
The festival kicks off with a faculty concert on August 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Kyungdong Hall, featuring violinist JongEun Lee (Professor, UNIST), pianists Taejin Kim (Professor, University of Ulsan) and Kwonyeong Hwang (Music Director, Daedong Antique), and cellists Daejun Kim (Principal Cellist of the Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra) and Hoonseon Chae (Luxe Trio). Their performances promise to deliver profound musical resonance to the audience.
Throughout the festival, masterclasses will be held from August 20 to 22, allowing students to refine their skills under the guidance of world-class performers. The culmination will be a student recital on August 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Jigwanseoga, featuring ten classic compositions by Mozart, Schubert, Dvořák, and others, filling the summer night with timeless melodies. The festival concludes on August 24 with a closing ceremony.
UNIST President Chong Rae Park emphasized the significance of integrating science and art, stating, “The fusion of science, technology, and art fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills.” He further added, “We hope this event allows participants to share their talents and provides citizens with a meaningful cultural experience.”
UNIST aims to leverage this event to strengthen its role not only for advanced scientific research but also for cultural and educational engagement with the local community.
