On February 24, UNIST has announced that it has received a gift of 130 million won in development funds, generously donated by the Hanmaum Seon Center of Ulsan, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and Monk Hyeja Sunim.
The significant contribution consists of 30 million won from the Hanmaum Seon Center of Ulsan, along with a personal donation of 100 million won from Monk Hyeja Sunim. These funds will be instrumental in advancing research on the sciences of mind and consciousness at UNIST.
The donation ceremony took place in the main administration building of UNIST and was attended by esteemed guests, including Monk Hyeja Sunim, who is in charge of general affairs, Monk Hyedam Sumin, responsible for finance, as well as UNIST President Chong Rae Park and Director Woonggyu Jung of the UNIST Development Fund.

President Park expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, stating, “We deeply appreciate the meaningful support shown by the Hanmaum Seon Center of Ulsan and Monk Hyeja Sunim. This contribution will enable us to further research on the sciences of mind and consciousness, which intersect with all fields of advanced science.”
Monk Hyeja Sunim remarked, “This donation reflects the collective efforts of those who believe in UNIST’s commitment to creating social value.” She further added, “We anticipate that UNIST will leverage its exceptional research capabilities to yield remarkable advancements in the realm of mind science.”
After the ceremony, the donors toured the UNIST Central Research Facilities (UCRF) and other key facilities, gaining insight into the state-of-the-art research environment. This donation is expected to serve as a cornerstone for advancing research in mind science and further enhancing UNIST’s research capabilities.
The Hanmaum Seon Center, a Buddhist temple founded by Daehaeng Kun Sunim in 1972, serves as a place for individuals to learn about their true nature. The center continues its mission today by emphasizing Seon practice in daily life, guiding individuals on how to discover their true selves and effectively apply this understanding in their everyday experiences. For over 20 years, the Hanmaum Seon Center of Ulsan has consistently supported scholarship initiatives aimed at cultivating local talent.
