Yu Jin Lee, a research professor in the Department of Life Sciences at UNIST, has been honored with the prestigious Amgen-KAST Biotechnology Award. This esteemed award recognizes exceptional research accomplishments in the fields of life science and bioengineering by young scientists in Korea.
The Amgen-KAST Biotechnology Award was established 21 years ago with the goal of identifying and rewarding emerging researchers in the country. Sponsored by Amgen Korea Inc., a global leader in biotechnology, and hosted by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), one of the nation’s most esteemed science and technology academic institutions, the award is bestowed upon one next-generation scientist and one postdoctoral researcher who have significantly contributed to elevating Korea’s biotechnology and research competitiveness through their impressive research achievements.
Professor Yu Jin Lee has been acknowledged in the ‘Postdoctoral Researcher‘ category for her significant contributions to the field of life science. Collaborating with Professor Young Chan Chae’s team in the Department of Biological Sciences, Professor Lee’s research has focused on elucidating the role of the ‘GPR143‘ protein in cancer metastasis. Their findings have revealed that the ‘GPR143‘ protein selectively binds to crucial biomolecules involved in cancer metastasis and facilitates their transfer into cancer cell exosomes. Additionally, animal models of cancer metastasis have confirmed that the exosomes released from cancer cells influence neighboring cells, thereby promoting cancer metastasis.
This groundbreaking study provides a foundation for a novel approach to cancer suppression, utilizing diagnostic technology that predicts cancer metastasis by employing GPR143 as a biomarker and controlling the exosome formation process.
Expressing her gratitude, Professor Lee stated, “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my laboratory members, family, and co-researchers for their unwavering support throughout this fascinating research endeavor. I will continue to pursue more challenging research while remaining true to my original intentions, striving to further advance as a scientist and technician.”
The award presentation ceremony took place at the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) on October 26, 2023. The winners were presented with a plaque and awarded 10 million won in prize money.
