《Editor’s Note: The spread of COVID-19 has brought significant changes to college campuses worldwide, forcing virtually all universities in South Korea to switch to online education. UNIST has been conducting non-face-to-face lectures since the first semester of 2020. However, with the recent decline in cases, many expect that campus life will soon return to normal. In order to help new students adapt to university life, the UNIST News Center and the Student Affairs Team plan to produce the ‘Welcome, First-Time at UNIST?’ series.》
The a cappella group of UNIST, Pitch High is filling the campus life with various activities.
We are Pitch High, the official acapella group of UNIST!
The term a cappella means “singing without instrumental accompaniment.” One thing that is interesting with Acappella is that it uses only the human voice to produce the sounds they sing. The voice of the singers produces all the accompaniments or sounds of the musical instruments.
Some of the representative a cappella groups that people might have encountered on YouTube or social media include MayTree, a South Korean five-member a cappella group that found themselves at the center of the attention after uploading a video that mimics the original sound effects of ‘Squid Game’ using human voice only. This also includes Pentatonix, an American a cappella group that is known for excelling at covering pop hits, including a medley of Daft Punk songs.
Pitch High has performed various styles of music, including urban, pop, and Christmas music. Prior to COVID-19, our group has been actively involved in the school festivals and busking events, and conducted regular performances every year. It had also been invited to perform at an outdoor festival.
However, since COVID hit, face-to-face performances have been limited. As a result, we have been producing sound sources and music videos, recording songs, and uploading them on our official YouTube channel and social media channels.
We plan on organizing more face-to-face events and performances, as well as video production once the campus life returns to normal. For more information regarding the club, please do not hesitate to contact us via Facebook 🙂

To help UNIST members enjoy a cappella more, we continuously plan on uploading videos of our performance on our official YouTube channel. For those curious about our songs, you can watch them on Pitch High’s official YouTube channel.
