《Editor’s Note: The spread of COVID-19 has brought significant changes to college campuses worldwide, forcing virtually all universities in South Korea to switch to online education. UNIST has been conducting non-face-to-face lectures since the first semester of 2020. However, with the recent decline in cases, many expect that campus life will soon return to normal. In order to help new students adapt to university life, the UNIST News Center and the Student Affairs Team plan to produce the ‘Welcome, First-Time at UNIST?’ series.》
The UNIST Orchestra (UNISTRA) is filling the campus life with various activities.
We are UNISTRA, the official orchestra of UNIST!
We are very excited to see everyone back on campus, and welcome those who are newly starting their campus lives. Since founded in 2013, UNISTRA aims to nurture world class global scientists fitting to UNIST’s vision of committing to excellence. If you wondered about the qualities of a world class science and engineering scholar, there are many answers such as, perseverance, persistence and patience, goal oriented, teamwork with colleagues, and the list goes on and on. UNISTRA aims to cultivate all these qualities. Many students find their identity through UNISTRA and has gone into successful career paths. This is the reason for UNISTRA and the value we pursue.

The pathway of a researcher is very tough. We’ve been accustomed to dealing with problems in which answers already exist, for example having to come up with recipes for faster and more efficient cooking. With so many discoveries and answers already made, we are pushed to create more solutions where not much solutions are left. Thus, in this painstaking environment, we need to find inspirations, creativity and energy to push forward.

UNISTRA represents UNIST through various external and internal performances including UNIST’s commencement and matriculation ceremony. To present these performances with the best quality possible, UNISTRA members put in a lot of effort. Our members develop self- analytical skills in the process. The process of recognizing one’s weakness and finding ways for improvement pushes each member to become better performers. Through this process, members develop intuition, sense for team work, and polished presenting manners. Members also develop work ethic and disciplined daily routines that transfer to their research world as well. Not only is UNISTRA a musical platform, we utilize music as a vehicle to grow and strive for excellence.
