UNIST continues to remain as one of South Korea’s top institutions, according to the JoongAng Ilbo’s comprehensive university rankings for 2021.
On November 11, JoongAng Ilbo has announced the results for this year’s JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings by Subject. In the 2021 rankings, UNIST has been included in the assessment of natural science and engineering disciplines.
For this year’s evaluation of engineering disciplines, 46 universities participated. The rankings revealed that UNIST has risen to South Korea’s 3rd best university, moving up two places from its ranking in 2019. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) ranked first in engineering, followed by Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). Hanyang University came in 4th place, following Sunkyunkwan University and Korea University.
The 2021 rankings for natural science disciplines targeted 38 universities. UNIST has been placed 6th place, dropping from 5th place in 2019. KAIST, again, ranked first in natural science, followed by POSTECH, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Yonsei University. Below is a detailed breakdown of university rankings in the fields of natural science and engineering.
In the 2021 rankings, UNIST stood out in the citation-based performance. UNIST, when measured based on the number of citations a university’s research obtains in the international journals, ranked No. 1 in both fields of engineering and natural science. UNIST scored 40 points in both evaluations, demonstrating excellent quality of research.
UNIST also well received for its contribution to the development of local community. UNIST ranked 4th position nationwide, following Seoul National University, POSTECH, and KAIST. Besides, when it came to regional evaluation, UNIST has also been placed No. 1 in Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam area. Pusan National University came in second, followed by Gyeongsang National University.
UNIST also did well in terms of university specialization. It has been ranked third overall, and thus recognized for its contribution to fostering high-caliber talents in science and engineering. KAIST ranked first, while POSTECH came in second. Seoul National University came in third, followed by Korea University.
The JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings encompasses comprehensive evaluation, evaluation of academic disciplines, and education-centered university evaluation. This annual academic assessment evaluates universities with 33 indicators and 300 points out of four categories: Educational environment, reputation, faculty research, as well as student employment and achievement. The comprehensive evaluation targets universities with more than four out of six fields, including humanities, society, natural science, engineering, medicine, and arts and sports.
