Two teams from the Department of Industrial Engineering within the College of Information and Biotechnology at UNIST made a splendid achievement of winning Grand and Excellence awards at the recent ‘Big Data/AI Competition for Digital Innovation in the Shipbuilding/Maritime Sector’.
Organized by the Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. Ltd., formerly Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., the competition aims to discover and nurture talents that can drive digital innovation in the shipbuilding and maritime sector. A total of 20 teams, including two teams from UNIST, took part in the finals after participating in the preliminaries. The competition has also been supported by both domestic and international companies, such as Microsoft Co., Ltd.
This year, two teams from UNIST made it to the final round of the competition. Team 2030, consisting of Professor Sunghoon Lim, MinJoo Ku, GyeongHo Kim, and JaeGyeong Choi won the Grand prize. The Excellence award went to Team DA-lab, consisting of Professor Sungil Kim, KwonIn Yoon, GiHeon Koh, and Jong Hwan Mun.
The Grand prize has been given to ‘Team 2030′ for proposing an analysis method and solutions for challenges in real-world industrial data (video, picture, photo, etc.) with the use of big data in the shipbuilding/maritime sector throughout the competition. In particular, through they application of various latest deep-learning methodologies, they carried out various tasks based on the understanding of industry pain points. Besides, the team made good performance for their differentiated idea and in-depth analysis of actual industrial field problems. The team will be given KRW 5 million in prize money and strong incentives when applying to Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, along with the grand prize.
The Excellence award has been given to ‘Team DA-lab’ for carrying out tasks, implementing various deep learning modules to solve the challenges of a given industrial site. The team also made good performance for their differentiated idea and in-depth analysis of actual industrial field problems. The team will be also given KRW 5 million in prize money and strong incentives when applying to Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, along with the grand prize.
