UNIST has joined hands with the Korea Water Forum (KWF) and the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), affiliated with the Ministry of Environment to solve global environmental challenges with the use of data science and AI.
A ceremony to mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among the three organizations took place in the Main Administration Building of UNIST on February 15, 2022.
In the memorandum of understanding, the three organizations have pledged cooperation in addressing and tackling environmental issues, relating to air pollution, drinking water, and sanitation based on their knowledge and expertise in the area of AI. To this end, the three organizations agreed to reinforce their cooperation, such as joint use of research equipment and facilities and the exchange of professional personnel, academic materials, and other information.
The scope of this MoU among the parties shall also include, but not be limited to, the following areas: △ Integrated joint research to tackle global environmental challenges, using AI, △ Development of AI-driven prediction, analysis, and optimization methods, and △ Resource-sharing. This also includes the construction of a public service system on education and information for AI and machine learning in the water sector.
In particular, UNIST plans to provide a customized technology support program for environmental Issue analysis using AI and machine learning algorithms, centered around the UNIST Graduate School of AI, which launched in 2020.
