The UNIST STEM camp concluded successfully with a completion ceremony, held on August 5, 2023. This immersive program provided an incredible opportunity for 60 local high school students from 25 different schools in Ulsan to delve into the world of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Over the course of the camp, these talented students engaged in hands-on activities that ranged from designing and constructing self-driving cars to drones and robots. The comprehensive process involved everything from component design to implementing cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to cultivate creative and versatile talents.
Originally designed for national science high schools, this year’s UNIST STEM Camp expanded its reach by including general high schools in the Ulsan region for the first time. Taking place throughout the UNIST campus from July 31 to August 5, 2023, this intensive program aimed at equipping future leaders of the Fourth Industrial Revolution with practical skills and knowledge.
During their time at the camp, participating students immersed themselves in various projects related to self-driving RC cars, automobiles, AI applications, drones, six-legged robots, and big data analysis. Prior to joining the camp itself, they also completed an eight-week online theory class that laid a solid foundation in creating autonomous vehicles and drones.
On day four of the camp came an exciting public showcase event where students had the chance to present their impressive creations: self-driving cars adorned with innovative technology solutions alongside drones equipped with advanced functionalities. Their app designs were also showcased through engaging YouTube broadcasts which can still be viewed via UNIST Leadership Center’s official channel.
One participant named JuHwan Jeong from Gangnam High School expressed his satisfaction with successfully building his own car during the camp. He highlighted how much he enjoyed special activity programs as well as inspirational mentor lectures while forging new friendships along the way. Based on these positive experiences alone; he eagerly expressed his desire to participate again in the future.
In collaboration with local governments, such as Ulju-gun and Buk-gu, the UNIST Leadership Center continues its steadfast efforts to foster scientific talents in Ulsan. They organize a variety of youth experience programs including ‘Hi-Leader Camp‘ and ‘Ulsan Dream Camp.’ These initiatives involve setting up mentor groups composed of dedicated UNIST students who provide professional guidance to both middle school and high school students, making a meaningful impact on their educational journeys.
