The ‘UNIST Carbon Neutral Symposium 2023‘ was successfully concluded on September 18, 2023. This esteemed event brought together distinguished experts to assess the current state of carbon neutrality and engage in insightful discussions regarding strategies for transitioning to a carbon-neutral society.
The symposium comprised three sessions, each addressing crucial aspects of the carbon-neutral agenda. Under the leadership of Professor Chang Keun Song, the first session featured presentations by Professor Young Hwan Ahn from Sookmyung Women’s University and Professor Jung-Hun Woo from Konkuk University. Their discussions centered around vital issues such as carbon-neutral response policies, including Korea’s greenhouse gas reduction policy.

The second session, expertly chaired by Professor Hail Jung from Seoul National University of Science and Technology, delved into the economic implications of carbon neutrality. Distinguished speakers, including Professor Chung, Managing Director JongKi Ryu from Ernst & Young Han Young (EY Korea), and Manager Cheol-Soo Lim from the National Institute of Environmental Research, shed light on topics such as EGS management and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
The third session, skillfully moderated by Professor Sujong Jeong from Seoul National University, explored the transformative changes required and the acceptability of the social system within the context of carbon neutrality. Presentations by Professor Jeong, Professor Eun-sung Kim from Kyung Hee University, and Director Hwi-Chul Chung from the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC) at the Korea Environment Institute (KEI) highlighted social changes and countermeasures during the carbon-neutral transition period.

The symposium was organized by the UNIST Carbon Neutral Institute, an institution dedicated to the development of practical technologies and the cultivation of highly skilled professionals to combat the climate crisis. The institute encompasses a carbon-neutral demonstration research center and a graduate school focused on carbon neutrality, both falling under the umbrella of the Carbon Neutral Convergence Institute.
In his inaugural address, Sung Youb Kim, Director of the UNIST Carbon Neutral Institute, emphasized the significance of engaging in diverse discussions with international experts to tackle the challenges of the carbon-neutral era. He specifically noted, “[This] symposium would serve as a valuable platform for showcasing UNIST’s research and education strategies related to carbon neutrality.”
The UNIST Carbon Neutral Institute, as the host of this event, remains committed to advancing practical technologies and nurturing exceptional human resources to effectively respond to the urgent climate crisis. UNIST’s establishment of the Carbon Neutrality Demonstration and Research Center, as well as the Graduate School of Carbon Neutrality within the UNIST Carbon Neutral Institute, further underscores its dedication to this crucial cause.
