On September 26, a special lecture featuring Sedol Lee, a former 9-dan ranked South Korean professional Go player, was held at Jigwanseoga, located on the 1F of UNIST Library. The event attracted not only UNIST members, but also citizens of Ulsan, providing a comprehensive exploration of the future of Go, science, and engineering in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
The lecture began with a brief introduction to ‘AI and Baduk‘ by Professor Jaeup Kim from the Department of Physics, who is also the author of 『 Understanding the Rules of Baduk』. Professor Kim captivated the audience by discussing the innovations and significance that AI technology has brought to the world of Go.
Sedol Lee shared his experiences playing against AlphaGo in 2016, articulating his feelings during the match. “The encounter with AI was a turning point, not only for the Go community but also for me personally,” he stated. “The advent of AI has completely transformed the game of Go.” He provided an in-depth analysis of AI’s impact on the Go community and the profound changes that have ensued.
Following the lecture, a talk concert led by Professor Chun Sang Yoo from the Department of Mechanical Engineering took place. Sedol Lee engaged with the audience, offering candid and insightful responses to both pre-submitted and spontaneous questions. His vision for the future, particularly regarding Generative AI, resonated deeply with the participants.
“It was an honor to exchange ideas about the future of AI with science and engineering students at UNIST,” remarked Sedol Lee. “I hope you all to continue challenging yourselves to explore new possibilities in the AI era.”
This lecture was part of the ‘UNIPLEX Special Talk‘ series, organized by the UNIST Department of Mechanical Engineering and coordinated by the UNIST Library Team.
