Professor Jayeong Park, an esteemed member of the faculty at the Department of Nuclear Engineering at UNIST, was recently bestowed with a commendation by the Minister of Science and ICT (MSIT) at the highly anticipated 2023 International Congress on Advancements in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2023), which was held at the Gyongju Hwabaek International Convention Center (HICO) on April 24, 2023.
The commendation was bestowed upon Professor Park in recognition of his significant contribution to the safety management of radioactive waste, an area in which he is a renowned expert.
As a leading authority on the topic, Professor Park has conducted extensive research on efficient volume reduction and safe disposal methods for radioactive waste. His main research area focuses on the development of molten salt-based electrochemical techniques to reduce the volume and toxicity of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. Professor Park’s outstanding work has garnered attention for his development of a technology that can safely dispose of radioactive waste that is difficult to dispose of using existing methods.
Currently, Professor Park is engaged in active research on corrosion reduction and monitoring technology for the molten salt reactor (MSR), a fourth-generation future reactor. Additionally, he is conducting research on the development of safety regulation technology for the safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
Professor Park expressed his elation at being acknowledged for their groundbreaking research on the pressing matters of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste by saying, “These issues have long been a challenge to the nuclear industry, and this commendation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team.”
