A research team, led by Professor Sang Jin Kweon from the Department of Industrial Engineering at UNIST, has been honored with the prestigious Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) Award at the ‘2023 National Industry-University Convergence District Project Lab Competition.’ The event, which took place in Naju City from December 16 to 17, 2023, recognized the team’s exceptional research project that successfully optimized the infrastructure of electric vehicle charging stations using public data.
The research project focused on the Seoul Metropolitan City, aiming to develop a charging infrastructure that meets the growing demand for electric vehicle charging in the coming years. By employing machine learning techniques to estimate the demand for electric vehicle charging at each station, the team devised a mathematical optimization model for efficient infrastructure planning. Distinguished from previous studies, this comprehensive approach to future charging needs led the project to secure the first prize among the 17 participating projects.
Under the supervision of Professor Kweon, researcher SuGyeong Jo played a pivotal role in leading the research efforts. The project also received significant contributions from students JaeSung Kim, SeokHo Yoon, DaGyo Kweon, Na Kyung Lee, and YuJin Song.
Expressing her appreciation, Researcher SuGyeong Jo stated, “Winning the Grand Prize is a source of great joy and pride for our laboratory, as it reflects the collective efforts of the entire team.”
Professor Kweon emphasized the significance of the achievement, stating, “This success exemplifies UNIST’s commitment to conducting cutting-edge research at a national level,” He further added, “Moving forward, we aim to continue our in-depth research, anticipating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and aiming to make a tangible impact on society.”
