UNIST held the 2020 New Year’s Kick-off Meeting in the auditorium of Main Administration Building at UNIST on January 2, 2020. At the meeting, President Yong Hoon Lee extended his New Year greeting, sharing the institution’s direction for 2020 and wishing the entire UNIST community a year full of happiness and prosperity.
The ceremony consisted of a special drum performance (also known as Nanta), a video playing which highlights the key achievements of the past year, opening remarks by President Yong Hoon Lee, as well as the presentation of awards.
In his New Year’s message this year, President Lee recounted, “The year 2019 is an important year for UNIST, as we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of UNIST.” He adds, “Although a decade is such a relatively short period of time for UNIST to realize its vision of becoming a leading university to advance science and technology for the prosperity of humankind, what UNIST has accomplished is not to be underestimated.”
“The things that must be done by UNIST is to carry out education and R&D beyond the speed of technological innovation in the 21st century,” says President Lee. “This can be [only] accomplished when UNIST, which has been a fast follower, changes to a leading innovator.”
President Lee also noted that “The year 2020 will be a springboard to take a leap into a new future beyond the achievements of the last decade.” Thus, he proposed the following 6 tasks: △ Reconstruction of the system of educational affairs in the form of decentralization, △ Enhanced faculty autonomy △ Reorganization of the undergraduate curriculum △ Presentation of career path & appropriate compensation system for faculty and staffs △ Establishment of ‘Research Planning Center’ and ‘Development Fund Foundation’.
President Lee expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all members of the UNIST community, aseembled in the auditorium of Main Administration Building at UNIST by saying, “These accomplishments would not have been possible without your hard work and passion.”
On the threshold of another promising year of growth and development, President Jung has asked the entire UNIST community for their cooperation and support in helping UNIST move beyond the current status into a leading university where science and technology advances for the betterment of the world.
At the ceremony, Professor Kyung Rok Kim in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded with the Global Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the improvement of UNIST’s reputation. He has conducted extensive and excellent research, as well as won several research projects in the past year.
Part Leader YongHwi Kim (Planning & Coordination Team) was awarded with the Convergence Award. Thus, Jeongmin Jeo (Planning & Coordination Team) and Jun Ho Lee (Academic Affairs Team) were also honored with the Creative Award. InHyouk Son (Audit Office) was given the award in recognition of his excellent performance in improving the campus administration system.
The above exemplary staff members were also recognized for their excellent services to UNIST. The following recipients were honored with the UNIST Development Merit Award at the ceremony: Jongryoung Kwon (Planning & Coordination Team), Youngcheol Oh (Admissions Team), Junyoung Jung (Admin Office of Energy and Chemical Engineering), Jeong In Ryu (Industry Innovation Team), Sang-Joon Jason Lee (UNIST Innovative Education Center), Nakyong Park (Educational Affairs Team), and Jin Youn Byun (Admin Office of General Studies).
The following members were also recognized for their outstanding performance towards the pursuit of institutional excellence. The following recipients were honored with the Institutional Evaluation Contributor Award at the ceremony: Sihyung Park (Research Promotion), Chulsu Kim (Part Leader, Technical Support Team), Sejin Cheon (Library Team), Jin Ho Hong (Information Technology Team), Youngil Choi (Safety Team), Young Kwang Kim (Academic Affairs Team), Ah Ran Kang (Research Management Team), Ha Eun Lee (IP Management & Commercialization Team), and Minji Lee (Startup Support Team).
