On March 2, 2015, UNIST finally received the final approval of the law revision to be changed to a research institute from the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee of Korea.
Since the revised bill of the law for UNIST has been deliberated and passed the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee, it will be put to the parliamentary plenary session on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 for a final vote. After receiving a bill passed by the National Assembly, the law is promulgated by the President Geun-hye Park.
Once the President signs the bill into public law, UNIST will reborn as one of Korea’s Science and Technology research Institutes under a special law with government funding. This would bring UNIST to range with three other Korea’s S&T Research Institutes, KAIST, GIST, and DGIST.
The law revision will bring many changes to the system. This includes government grants that support both current and prospective UNIST students, as well as exemptions from military service for South Korean nationals.
