A UNIST graduate student, Jae Gyeong Choi (Advisor: Professor Sunghoon Lim) from the Department of Industrial Engineering has been recognized for outstanding poster presentation at the 2021 International Conference of Women Scientists and Engineers conference on BT, IT, ET, and NT (BIEN).
Ms. Choi has been selected as a winner for the 2021 BIEN Best Poster Award (2nd place) on IT session of BIEN 2021 for her recently submitted paper, entitled “Car Crash Detection Using Ensemble Deep Learning and Multimodal Data from Dashboard Cameras“.
Initiated in 2003, BIEN is the first-ever convergence-themed international conference of women scientists and engineers on Bio, Information, Environment/Energy, Nano and Space technologies, jointly organized by the Association of Korean Woman Scientists and Engineers (KWSE) and the International Network of Women Engineers & Scientists (INWES).
BIEN 2021 took place from August 18 to 20, 2021 in a hybrid format combining in-person sessions in Daejeon, Korea with online participation. Under the theme of “Women Scientists andEngineers Leading the Future from New Normal,” the conference brought together over 450 expert scientists from 33 countries to discuss issues ranging from bio, information, environment/energy/earth, nano and space technologies. This year’s conference featured seven scientific sessions of Bio Technology (BT), Information Technology (IT), Environment/Energy/Earth Technology (E3T), Nano Technology (NT), Space Technology (ST), Covergence Technology (CT), and Basic Science.
This award has been given to Ms. Choi for proposing a new car crash detection model, based on ensemble deep learning and multimodal data (i.e., both video and audio data) from dashboard cameras. The proposed car crash detection system is expected to be used as part of an emergency road call service that recognizes traffic accidents automatically and allows immediate rescue after transmission to emergency recovery agencies.
